Careers in Construction

October puts focus on Careers in Construction Check out the video here. NAHB is partnering with educators, members, and state and local HBAs to address the housing industry’s labor shortages and to develop a skilled workforce for the future. For Careers in Construction month, NAHB offers some new resources and tools to continue moving this conversation forward on all levels--locally with the boots on the ground, through the education system and among policy makers. The new Building a Skilled Labor Workforce page provides promotional materials you can distribute to area community centers, high schools and colleges. There is a wealth of data and ideas on how to promote construction careers right here in Clark County. In addition, the members-only Skilled Workforce Development Resources page now features lesson plans that building professionals can use to encourage interest in construction careers at the middle school level. Over the course of this past year, the BIA has been involved in a few workforce development forums, discussing the skilled workforce shortage with other local organizations, community leaders and stakeholders. We remain engaged with many thought leaders working on this issue. Several BIA members have participated in making presentations to local students at middle school Career Day events, sharing their knowledge and passion for the building industry and encouraging students to consider a path towards the skilled trades. The BIA also recently sent out a call to action and link for employers to participate in a Construction/Infrastructure Workforce Survey regarding workforce development needs in our local area. We hope many of you took the time to fill out the survey and communicate the future workforce needs of your company. Development of a skilled workforce and the current skilled workforce shortage is an issue affecting all building trades. Become part of the solution: please invest some time in the future viability of your company by joining in on our efforts to build a skilled workforce. Most of our members do not employ lobbyists. But, as a BIA member you do have professionals lobbying for your business every day! The Building Industry Group also pays dues for each member to the state PAC (Washington Affordable Housing Council - WAHC) for important work they are undertaking at the State level to help our industry. Bottom line, together we have the political might that none of us have individually. The BIG is a powerful political action committee with tremendous ability to influence in Clark County. This PAC identifies and helps fund local candidates who are pro-business and promote fiscally responsible policy. Get involved today! Contact PAC Chair Tracy Wilson to learn more.
